October 2020

The Awards Assembly for 2020 was held in Morris Hall recently, at which many of the awards presented are Old Boys’ Association Effort Awards. These Effort Awards are presented to one student from each house who has made significant effort over the year to progress his learning and has shown evidence of working consistently hard to improve his results by seeking and using feedback for improvement. This occasion is also where the Student Leaders for the following year are announced. Congratulations to the Student Leaders for 2021 (pictured above L-R): School Captain Campbell Mountford, School Vice-Captain Tyson McMullen – son of Blake McMullen (1982), School Vice-Captain Luka Price and Head Boarder Lawson McCamley – son of Ian McCamley (1979).

The Churchie Luncheons are back on and this year, however given the impact of COVID-19, it will be a single event. On Wednesday 2 December 2020, commencing at 11 am, the Churchie Cricket and Rugby Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC). In lieu of not having been able to proceed with our 2020 Old Boys Dinner, this is the perfect opportunity to support the school and catch up with some old mates. Whilst many Old Boys take corporate tables and others gather their respective cohorts to fill tables, we are also reaching out to those who have not been before or are looking to meet up with those from a similar era. An interactive booking form has been setup to facilitate these bookings, which will be grouped into tables of 8. When booking, simply open the Book Individual Seats section and when prompted to insert the name of Table Captain simply put OLD BOY and your year of graduation. We looking forward to seeing as many Old Boys as possible to this event which always makes for a cracking afternoon of entertainment, networking and fun. For more details please refer to the post later in the newsletter or click here now to secure your seat.

All cohort reunions have been impacted by either being rescheduled or shifted to 2021. Please refer to the event page of the OBA website for the latest updates. We will continue to provide updates as required via our social media pages and in our monthly editions of Viking Spirit. Aside from this, if you have queries or concerns please email the OBA office at oba@churchie.com.au or call us directly on 07 3896 6462.

Jesse the Defiant

Old Boy Jesse Daley (2014) was a member of the Churchie First XI from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 he was vice-captain and was also a member of the Queensland Independent Schools (Uhlsport) Cup champions. Jesse has always remained in contact with the Churchie programme and is still thought of fondly by the staff who worked with him while he was a student at Churchie.

Since leaving school Jesse has been a member and captain of the Brisbane Roar National Youth League (NYL) team and more recently has spent the last few years in the United States playing for Tacoma Defiance, which is the second team to Seattle Sounders in the Major League Soccer (MLS). Whilst there he was referred to as Jesse the Defiant for his tough, gritty and determined style of play, sheer force of will and abundance of ambition. He was also described as “A captain without the rank” as his voice is strong enough that wearing an armband is considered unnecessary.

Jesse has just signed a contract with Brisbane Roar. Congratulations Jesse! In doing so, Jesse will play alongside fellow Old Boy Jordan Courtney-Perkins (2020), who was recently announced as the Roar’s Breakthrough Player of the Year for 2020.

Evolution of the Prep Billy Cart Grand Prix

The 2020 Prep Billy Cart Grand Prix recently entered a new era when, for the first time in its 31year history, it was live-streamed. With COVID-19 restrictions preventing spectator attendance, this wonderful initiative enabled parents and grandparents alike to view this iconic Churchie event locally, regionally and indeed internationally. Evolution Productions, founded by Old Boys Oscar Kemp (2011) and Michael Kersnovske (2010), were contracted to stream the event and in doing so provided a full production crew of Old Boys who presented an extremely professional production. It really is testament to the experience gained when part of Churchie’s Stage Crew that has inspired these young men and many other Old Boys to pursue and forge careers in production.

In December 2011, Oscar and Michael started Evolution to provide creative production solutions across Brisbane. After two years they saw a need to expand into live events and are now providing seamless start-to-finish (no pun intended) production management for sports games, award nights, seminars and conferences across a range of sectors.

Brigalow to Bulldust

In his working life since his school days at Churchie, Old Boy Jerry O’Sullivan (1962) has been a Stock Agent/Auctioneer, Shopkeeper, Marketing Manager and Grain Trader. Now retired and living in Toowoomba, he has spent the last few years researching and writing a book, interspersed with games of golf of course.

Published under the title ‘Brigalow to Bulldust’, Jerry chronicles a true story of country life and the characters he knew in rural Queensland, spanning Central Queensland, South Burnett, the Darling Downs and west to Roma and Mitchell. The story has origins from the 1880s when Jerry’s grandfather took up land at Muckadilla near Mitchell, through to his own upbringing on ‘Ashmount’. Jerry’s granddaughter Mia, with a little bit of help from her father, designed the cover artwork.

Jerry’s family connection with Churchie is incredibly strong. His father Harry O’Sullivan (1937) and all five of his uncles were Churchie boarders – William O’Sullivan (1933), John O’Sullivan (1936), Dennis O’Sullivan (1938), Desmond O’Sullivan (1939) and Brian O’Sullivan (1948). During the 1930s, Jerry’s father and three of his O’Sullivan uncles were boarders at the same time. The tradition has continued with most of his cousins having followed the same path. Furthermore, grandsons and great-grandsons of the original O’Sullivan’s are past, current and future Churchie boys.

‘Brigalow to Bulldust’ is available for purchase for $35 (incl postage). To purchase a copy, please contact Jerry directly on 0488 130 198 or by email at jerryosullivan45@gmail.com.  Copies are also available at the Mitchell Visitor Information Centre which is located within the Great Artesian Spa complex. By buying a copy you will also be supporting MS Research and Ovarian Cancer Research.
